The Second Annual Interdisciplinary Meeting & Workshop on Influenza Virus Evolution, Immunity, and Epidemiology June 7-8, 2011 was held by the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD, USA.

The general scientific meeting on June 7 fostered discussion among researchers in the NIH community who have diverse perspectives on the evolutionary dynamics of influenza viruses, the determinants of disease transmission and severity, and issues of population immunity. The agenda for the general scientific meeting is available here.

As with previous training workshops organized by MISMS, the Phylogenetics Workshop scheduled for Wednesday, June 8 was designed to help build analytical capacity for epidemiologic and molecular studies of influenza, identify potential collaborators, and disseminate new scientific findings that may serve to inform influenza control strategies. The agenda for the phylogenetics workshop is available here.

Thanks to everyone who attended the meeting and workshop, particularly those who traveled long distances and those who stayed for the interactive hands-on tutorial in phylogenetics.  We were delighted by the diversity of presentations and the level of engagement and discussion, and we hope that, as in past years, these conversations facilitate future collaborations across institutes and disciplines.  If you have any general or specific comments about the meeting, including suggestions for next year or potential topics or speakers we should think about including, please feel free to email nelsonma@mail.nih.gov or viboudc@mail.nih.gov.
